LakeSection

Thelakesectionisnorthofthepalacesectionandcoversabout80hectares.UnliketheSummerPalace’sKunmingLake,whichisanopenexpanseofwater,thelakesherearesmaller,more-complicated,interconnectedaffairs,andcomeinavarietyofshapesandsizesandfeatureislets,causeways,bridges,pavilions,etc.Oneofthemostbeautifulsitesinthelakesectionisthe“MoonColorandRiverSound”Islet.Whennightfalls,thesurroundingwatersshimmerwithmoonlight.Itissopeacefulandpicturesque.ThelakesidebuildingsweredesignedinthestyleofsouthernChinesearchitecture,andlooktransplantedfromJiangsuorZhejiang.

Four-fifthsoftheImperialSummerVillaismountainous,slopingdownfromthenorthwesttothesoutheast.Themountainsectionismerelythemostmountainousarea.SitestovisithereincludetheQingchuiSunsetGlowPavilion,whichoffersgorgeousviewsofQingchuiPeakatsunset,whichglowsunderthegoldenraysofthesettingsun.ThemostbreathtakingpavilionoftheentiregardenisperhapstheSnowCoveredSouthMountainPavilion.Locatedhighonamountaininthegarden,itofferspanoramicviewsthatincludetheentireImperialSummerVilla,muchofthesurroundingcountryside,anddowntownChengde.(TextbyHanYuelingandAllenChai)
